Curriculum vitae

Hanneke Bot is a broadly trained social scientist. After graduating in sociology from the University of Wageningen, the Netherlands in 1976, she trained post academically in group and organisation psychology and in psychotherapy. Since 1994 she has been a registered psychotherapist in the Netherlands (BIG registration number 29043293616, see www.bigregister.nl) and gained her PhD at the University of Utrecht (Utrecht Institute of Linguistics) in 2005.

For more than 10 years Hanneke Bot lived and worked as a sociologist/researcher and counsellor in a number of African countries (the French speaking part of the  Cameroons, Nigeria and Kenya) and also spent several months working in Asia. In 1988 she returned to the Netherlands where she still lives today.

from 1995 – 2016 Hanneke Bot has been working with interpreters on a daily basis in  mental health care, treating patients with whom she does not share a language.  Her PhD research focused on working with interpreters in this sector and she has published widely about this subject both in the Netherlands and internationally.

She is a member of the Kwaliteitsinstituut Wbtv – a committee advising the Register for Sworn Interpreters and Translators, and as such the Minister of Justice, on policy matters regarding the quality of sworn interpreters and translators. She has been a member of the Complaints Committee for registered Interpreters and Translators of the Dutch Ministry of Justice. From 2002-2004 Dr. Bot was scientific advisor to a research project focusing on “working with non-professional interpreters in health care” organised by the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

In 2005 she was member of a project group formulating norms for the use of interpreters in health care for the Dutch Ministry of Health.

From 2008 – 2012  she was member of the editorial board of Cogiscope, a Dutch language quarterly on sequels to war and violence.

From 2010 -2015 she lectures (research methodology)  in the Master Interpreting of Leuven University, campus Antwerp, Belgium.

Administrative functions

1984-1987 Treasurer to the Board of the Amani Counselling Society, Nairobi, Kenya: an organisation offering counselling services and counsellor training and also responsible for public awareness campaigns re mental health care.

1990-94 Secretary to the Board of the Fokkesteeg Health Care Centre, Nieuwegein, the Netherlands

2001- 2009 Secretary to the Board of the University for Humanistic Studies (www.uvh.nl)
